A dental implant is a prosthesis that osseointegrates with the jawbone or maxillary bone to support a dental prosthesis, such as a crown, a bridge, or a denture.

Steps before the implants are placed

Evaluation:

Before an implant is placed in a patient’s mouth, a comprehensive evaluation of the oral health and general health of the patient is completed. We use dental X rays and CBCT scanning which produces a 3D image to gain a full view of the supporting bone structure and any pathology or abnormality that may cause implant failure. A custom treatment plan is created that is personalized to your needs and goals.

Extractions:

Many patient will need to have damaged teeth extracted before they can begin the implant process. Sometimes the implants can be placed immediately following the extractions if the patient is in good oral health and has good bone density.

Gum disease/periodontal disease:

The success of your implants depends on the health of your bone and gums. If you suffer from periodontal disease, you will need to seek the proper treatment first or risk implant failure. This will increase the total amount of time it takes to complete the process and depends on how far the disease has progressed.

Bone graft:

Having enough bone to support the implants is very important . If you suffered from periodontal disease, a chronic infection, or didn’t have a tooth in that site for a long time, there is a chance that there wont be enough bone for an implant. In this case, you will need to have a bone graft performed to rebuild jawbone. This also extends the time it takes to complete the dental implant process by 3 to 4 months.

So what happens during an implant surgery in a healthy mouth?

Step 1:

The dentist will remove the tooth. After the tooth has been removed (and bone is healthy), the dentist will drill a hole in the jawbone (bottom)/maxillary bone (top) of the patient and place the screw like implant there. It is possible to have a bone graft placed before the implant is placed to have adequate thickness for the implant.

3-6 months of healing time

Step 2:

Over the 3-6 month healing time, the dental implant will fuse with the bone in a process called osseointegration.

Step 3:

Once the dental implant has healed and integrated fully with the surrounding bone, an abutment will be placed on the implant. This will serve as the foundation for the ceramic crown. A final impression is taken and sent to the dental lab for fabrication of ceramic crown.

Step 4:

At the last appointment, we will place the final crown on the abutment and you will be done with treatment.
