Why does a cracked tooth hurt?
When the crack opens, the pulp inside the tooth becomes irritated. If the crack extends into the pulp, the tooth becomes painful/sensitive to heat, cold and pressure.
The types of treatment for a cracked tooth include the following:
No treatment on the cracked tooth right away. Wearing a nightguard would prevent grinding at night and crack the tooth even further.
Repairing the tooth with a filling
Placing a crown on the tooth to protect it from further damage
Endodontic (root canal) therapy if the nerves of the tooth are infected.
Removing the tooth if it is severely cracked and cannot be saved.
