Cracked Tooth Syndrome
Signs you may have a cracked tooth
- Sharp pain while chewing or biting down. It may quickly disappear or linger for several minutes.
- Pain that comes and goes
- Pain when drinking something hot or cold
- Sensing that something is stuck between your teeth.
Why does a cracked tooth hurt?
When the crack opens, the pulp inside the tooth becomes irritated. If the crack extends into the pulp,the tooth becomes painful/sensitive to heat, cold and pressure.
The types of treatment for a cracked tooth include the following:
- No treatment on the cracked tooth right away. Wearing a nightguard would prevent grinding at night and crack the tooth even further.
- Repairing the tooth with a filling
- Placing a crown on the tooth to protect it from further damage
- Endodontic (root canal) therapy if the nerves of the tooth are infected.
- Removing the tooth if it is severely cracked and cannot be saved.
